Sweet Corn
In the spring of 1978, my grandfather planted a little under an acre of Iochief sweetcorn. The business was delegated to my grandmother and dad, who was eight years old at the time. Eventually my dad gained full responsibility and expanded his patch to four acres, later paying cash for his first truck at age seventeen. The business was passed on to my mom for several years and at age eleven, was handed down to me and my brother Jake. I began making the customer list and hoeing out rows. I learned how to market it and many late June nights were spent camping out in the patch, banging pans and making noise to keep the coons and deer out. At age 16, I too payed cash for my first chevy truck with money I had saved from the many summers spent in the sweetcorn patch. Currently, we raise around 2 acres of Honey Select. My little sister Julia (11 yrs) has become a tremendous help as well this past year. Hopefully we will continue to expand our family corn business!
